3 Reasons why You have to visit Dinant

Dinant
The facade of Dinant. It is the most beautiful spot in town! End of discussion.

During our nearly three weeks of living in Belgium, I got the impression, that there are three towns, that are the raisins of Belgium tourism. No discussion for Bruges and Ghent – they are famous worldwide. And then there is a Wallonian pearl – Dinant. Since we are still newcomers here, we haven’t got a chance to visit first two. However, we have already been conquered by the beauty of the third one.

Dinant is a small town in Southern part of Belgium, located on the beautiful shores of River Meuse. Its landscape is quite extraordinary for this kind of flat country like Belgium. Dinant is surrounded by quite high sharp rocks, which, as I see it, gives town half of its charm.

We were there for less than a day, walked 8 kilometers, drank two beers, had a lunch on the river bank and made more than 170 pics. That was more than enough, so that I could give you 3 strong reasons why you should visit this cutie pie. Here it goes.

#1 Extraordinary surroundings.

Dinant
The entrance to the city. We were surprisingly shocked, when we saw it.

As much, as we had a chance to see, Belgium is a flat country. There are some hilly parts of the, but mainly it is forests and beautiful meadows with cheerful cows in it. However, Dinant is different. And not just because we there aren’t any cows.

Town is surrounded by rocks, which, starting from the entrance to the city, seems to be protecting it. All the guests of Dinant, has to enter through narrow road between the high rocks. And all the time later, those rocks are standing like a wall, no matter where you go.

Just walking around, enjoying the beauty.

Together with this beautiful view, unique landscape also brings interesting activities, you can experience. Here in Dinant, you can go hiking, ride with cable car or even explore dark and mystic life in the cave… But more about it later.

I think we all like extraordinary places, don’t we? The landscape, that surrounds Dinant, definitely make him stand out from other cute towns in Belgium. And there is one more reason for that…

#2 River Meuse.

Dinant
They can’t stop admiring their beautiful town! Can’t blame them for that.

Do you agree, that cities, that have rivers or canals crossing them are more charming than those without it? Well, River Meuse is the second most charming thing, that makes Dinant awesome. It divides city into two parts, and no matter from which river bank you are watching, it is the best place to admire the city.

It was really nice to watch, how the residents of the city are not bored from admiring their beautiful town. There was a lot of students, cheerfully sitting on the river bank after their lessons, and elder people, walking around and stopping to admire their beloved town’s beauty. Good vibes are floating in the air on the bank of River Meuse.

Dinant
As I said, the view like in a picture!

From there Dinant looks like a painted picture. Colorful houses are reflected in the water; once in a while small boats cross the smooth river’s surface; majestic church and the sound of its bells are all around you; small cable cars are going up and down the mountain, that looks like a city wall; you are watching tiny figures of people posing at the highest point of the city…

Peaceful River Meuse

While sitting on the bank of River Meuse, we felt so relaxed, that we enjoyed that moment for a bit longer time. Maybe it’s just because of the nice sunny weather and the glass of beer, that we had?

One thing is clear. The best place to admire the city for us, was the shore of River Meuse, just in front of the main church. And I’m almost sure, that it would be for you too.

# 3 Points for various interests.

Dinant
Town Hall is the most charming building in town. As I said not once, creeper plants always look good!

I have already mentioned some of the main points of interest, like some mystic cave and cable cars to the top of the city. But there is more. For various types of interests.

Firstly, Dinant is a birthplace of Mr. Adolphe Sax, the inventor of saxophone. Yup, yup, yup, saxophone is from the banks of River Meuse. So everywhere you turn, you will find something to do with that instrument. For example, on the main town’s bridge you can find, I think, 10 or more of them, colored in various ornaments and tones. And there is also Mr. Saxophone Inventor sitting on one of the benches of the city. However, the main place to visit for sax lovers is the house of Adolphe Sax. As we heard, there are interesting stuff to see.

Dinant
Going up to Grotte La Merveilleuse. Sadly, it was closed.

However, saxophone museum wasn’t must visit place for use. But a huge cave definitely was! Second attraction, that town has to offer, is Grotte La Mervelleuse. However, we weren’t lucky to visit it – when we reached the place, Grotte was closed. Also, as we read on the entrance board, you need a guided tour to get inside. But, well, it was interesting how this kind of cave can change the weather outside. It was cold and a lot of humidity all around the place.

Dinant
Beautiful streets with a peaceful atmosphere.

Thirdly, it is Citadelle of Dinant. It’s the highest point of city, from where you can not only explore town’s history, but also to admire Dinant from up above. You can reach it by cable car or by foot, climbing more than 400 steps. Both of these options can be found on the right side of spectacular Notre-Dame Church. To be fair, this one is the fourth point of interest, that you have to see from both – inside and outside. It is gorgeous!

Dinant
Be careful, if you will ever try to take a pic with this guy. He is unstable! I mean, literally, he is not stable, like statues should be. He is moving.

Finally, do you like castles? Of course you do! Everybody does.  There are a lot of castles, manor houses and other a bit royal and  historically significant stuff around Dinant. All of them are located around the beautiful River Meuse. And, considering, that there is a road by the river for pedestrians and bicycles all the way from Dinant to Namur 1, they are easy to reach.

For example, the place, that interests me the most, is in about 10 kilometers away and is called Jardins d’Annevoie. It is a spectacular gardens located around beautiful manor house. We still haven’t visited it, but we will definitely tell you more about it, when we do. There are also Castle of FreÿrCrèvecœur CastleCastle of Vêves, that astonish both by their history, and their architecture. Looking forward to see those too!

Dinant
By car, by train or by foot. No excuses! You have to reach this town in Belgium.

Have you heard about Dinant before? Or have you already visited it?

I, personally, enjoyed it very much. It is a town, that has a face for a fairy tale. I mean, that I can easily imagine Dinant as a town, where Hans Christian Andersen stories took place. And as we all know, I love places with a little bit magic in the air.

Dinant
Till the next time, Dear Reader!

To sum up, if you ask my opinion, you should put Dinant on your road trip through Belgium list. It is unique and extraordinary town. And not only in Belgium, but in whole Europe.

Have a good upcoming week, Dear Reader!
